How to Get a Return to Work Letter in Alberta
A return to work letter (also called a fitness to return letter or medical clearance letter) is documentation from a physician confirming you're fit to resume your job duties after an illness or injury. Many Alberta employers require this before allowing you back.
Getting one shouldn't be complicated. Here's exactly how the process works, what the letter includes, and how to get yours quickly.
When Do You Need a Return to Work Letter?
You typically need a return to work letter when: you've been off work for 3 or more consecutive days, your employer has a policy requiring medical clearance, you work in a safety-sensitive position, your absence was related to a contagious illness, or your job involves physical demands and you had a physical injury.
What a Return to Work Letter Includes
A standard return to work letter confirms: that a physician has assessed your fitness to work, the date you are cleared to return, any temporary restrictions or modifications needed (e.g., no heavy lifting for 2 weeks), whether you can return to full duties or need a graduated return, and when restrictions are expected to be lifted.
How to Get One Online
Step 1: Complete our online intake form (5-10 minutes). Describe your original illness or injury, your current symptoms, and your job duties.
Step 2: A CPSA-registered physician reviews your information and assesses your fitness to return.
Step 3: Your signed return to work letter is delivered to your email, typically within 2-4 hours.
Step 4: Forward the letter to your employer or HR department.
When In-Person Assessment Is Required
Some situations require in-person evaluation: WCB workplace injury claims, post-surgical clearance requiring physical examination, safety-sensitive positions with specific fitness testing protocols, or conditions requiring diagnostic testing (blood work, imaging) before clearance.
If our physician determines an in-person assessment is needed, we'll inform you and provide a full refund.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does a return to work letter cost?
Return to work letters are $79 with same-day delivery. This includes physician review and any necessary modifications or restrictions documentation.
Can the letter include modified duties?
Yes. If you're returning with restrictions (reduced hours, no heavy lifting, work from home, etc.), the physician can specify these in your letter.
Do I need the same doctor who gave me my sick note?
No. Any CPSA-registered physician can issue a return to work letter. You don't need to see the same doctor.
What if my employer has their own form?
Upload your employer's form during intake and we'll complete it. We're familiar with forms from AHS, government, energy companies, and other major Alberta employers.
Letters are issued only when clinically appropriate after physician review. MedLetter does not guarantee that a letter will be issued. Employers may have their own policies about documentation.
