Return to Work After Illness Alberta
Returning to work after an illness, whether it was a week-long flu, a bout of COVID, or a longer medical absence, often requires documentation from a physician. Alberta employers, particularly those in healthcare, food service, and safety-sensitive industries, may require confirmation that you are no longer contagious and fit to resume duties.
MedLetter provides same-day return-to-work assessments for common illnesses, so you can get back to your job without the added stress of finding a clinic appointment during your recovery.
When Do Employers Require Clearance After Illness?
Not every illness requires a clearance letter to return to work. However, many Alberta employers require documentation in these situations: absences of 3 or more consecutive days, roles involving food handling or preparation, healthcare and patient-care roles, childcare and education roles, safety-sensitive positions, and when the illness was potentially contagious (flu, COVID, stomach virus).
Even if your employer doesn't require it, having a clearance letter protects you. It documents that a physician confirmed you're fit to return, which can be important if questions arise later.
Common Illnesses We Provide Clearance For
Our physicians regularly issue return-to-work clearance for: influenza (flu), COVID-19 (after isolation period), gastroenteritis (stomach flu/food poisoning), respiratory infections (bronchitis, pneumonia recovery), migraines and chronic headache episodes, back pain and musculoskeletal issues, anxiety and stress-related absences, and general viral infections.
COVID-19 Return to Work
If you've been absent due to COVID-19, your employer may require confirmation that you've completed your isolation period and are fit to return. Our physicians can issue clearance confirming that, based on current Alberta Health guidelines, you are no longer required to isolate and are fit to resume duties.
Note: Alberta's isolation requirements have changed over time. Our physicians stay current with the latest guidelines to ensure your documentation is accurate.
Returning with Restrictions
If you've recovered from your illness but aren't quite at 100%, the physician can issue a return-to-work letter with temporary restrictions. For example: 'Cleared to return to work. Recommend reduced hours (6-hour shifts) for the first week.' or 'Cleared to return. Avoid strenuous physical activity for 5 days.'
This allows you to get back to work and earning income while still protecting your recovery.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need clearance after every illness?
Not always. Most employers only require it after 3+ days of absence, for roles involving food handling or patient care, or for safety-sensitive positions. Check your employer's specific policy.
Can I get clearance after COVID?
Yes. Our physician can confirm you have completed your isolation period per current Alberta Health guidelines and are fit to return to work.
What if I'm still not 100%?
The physician can issue a return-to-work letter with temporary restrictions (reduced hours, limited physical activity, etc.) if you're mostly recovered but need some accommodations.
How soon after my illness can I get clearance?
You can request clearance as soon as you feel ready to return. The physician will assess whether it's clinically appropriate based on your reported symptoms and recovery.
Return-to-work clearance is issued only when clinically appropriate. For ongoing or complex conditions, in-person follow-up may be recommended. MedLetter does not provide WCB documentation.
