Sick Note for Cold & Flu in Alberta
The common cold and influenza are among the most frequent reasons Albertans need time off work. Symptoms can range from mild congestion to severe body aches and fever that make working impossible.
Common symptoms: Fever and chills, Sore throat and cough, Nasal congestion and runny nose, Body aches and fatigue, Headache, Loss of appetite. Typical duration: 3-7 days for a cold, 1-2 weeks for flu.
Most employers require a sick note after 3 consecutive days of absence. If your cold or flu keeps you home for more than 2 days, it's wise to get documentation early rather than scrambling later.
Under Alberta Employment Standards, employers can request a medical note for absences. A signed sick note from a CPSA-registered physician satisfies this requirement without needing an in-person visit.
