British Columbia provides some of the strongest sick leave protections in Canada.
## Paid Sick Days in BC
As of 2025, BC employees are entitled to 5 paid sick days per year after 90 days of employment. Part-time employees are also eligible.
## Unpaid Sick Leave
Beyond the 5 paid days, BC employees are entitled to 3 additional days of unpaid illness or injury leave per year — a total of 8 protected sick days.
## Documentation Requirements
Employers can request proof of illness, but:
- Cannot require disclosure of specific diagnosis
- Cannot require documentation for 1-2 day absences (generally)
- Must reimburse sick note costs if their policy mandates one
## Employer Retaliation Is Illegal
BC law prohibits employers from penalizing employees for taking legitimate sick leave — including termination, demotion, or reduced hours.
