How to Get a Sick Note for Exam Deferral at BC Universities
Missing an exam due to illness at a BC university? Here's how to get proper documentation for a deferral at UBC, SFU, UVic, and more.
## How to Get a Sick Note for Exam Deferral at BC Universities
If you're too sick to write an exam at a BC university, you'll need medical documentation to request a deferral. Here's what each major institution requires.
### University Requirements
**UBC (University of British Columbia)**
- Submit through the Student Service Centre
- Note must be dated on or before the exam date
- Must confirm inability to attend/perform
- Academic Concession form required
**SFU (Simon Fraser University)**
- Submit to your department or the Registrar's Office
- Documentation must cover the exam date
- Self-declaration accepted for some faculties (check your department)
**UVic (University of Victoria)**
- Submit to the Records Office
- Medical documentation required for final exams
- Must apply within 10 days of the missed exam
**BCIT**
- Submit to Student Health Services or your program
- Note must be from a licensed physician
- Apply within 3 business days
### What Your Note Must Include
Most BC universities require:
1. Confirmation of a medical condition (not the diagnosis)
2. That you were unable to attend/write on the exam date
3. The physician's name and licence number
4. Date of assessment
### Timing Is Critical
- Get your note **on or before** the exam date if possible
- Most universities have strict deadlines (3-10 days after the missed exam)
- Late documentation may not be accepted
