How Long Is a Sick Note Valid in Ontario? Expiry & Renewal Guide
Sick notes don't last forever. Here's how long they're valid in Ontario and when you need to get a new one.
## How Long Is a Sick Note Valid in Ontario?
There's no universal "expiry date" for sick notes in Ontario, but there are practical limits and employer expectations.
### General Guidelines
- **A sick note covers the dates specified on it** — no more, no less
- If your note says "off work May 1-5," it's not valid for May 6
- Open-ended notes ("until further notice") are valid until a return to work note is issued
- Most employers expect updated documentation every 2-4 weeks for extended absences
### When You Need a New Note
Get a renewed sick note when:
- Your original note's end date has passed but you're still unwell
- Your employer requests updated documentation
- Your condition has changed (better or worse)
- You're applying for EI Sickness Benefits extension
- You're transitioning from full absence to modified duties
### Employer Policies Vary
| Absence Length | Typical Requirement |
|---|---|---|
| 1-3 days | Often no note needed (ESA protects first 3 days) |
| 4-7 days | Initial note usually required |
| 1-2 weeks | May need one update |
| 2-4 weeks | Updates every 1-2 weeks |
| 1+ month | Regular updates (biweekly) |
