BC provides several types of leave for employees who need to care for sick family members.
## Family Responsibility Leave
5 days of unpaid leave per year to:
- Care for an ill child
- Attend to health needs of family members
- Deal with urgent family matters
- Address emergency situations
## Compassionate Care Leave
Up to 27 weeks of unpaid leave when a family member has a serious medical condition with significant risk of death.
## Documentation Requirements
Family responsibility leave: employers can request proof but cannot demand detailed medical information about your family member.
Compassionate care leave: medical certificate for the ill family member is required.
